Favorites to win NFL Coach of the Year

Jim Harbaugh (+1000 via FanDuel)

Harbaugh won this award in runaway fashion the last time he took a new coaching job in the NFL. So it makes sense why he's the early favorite to do so again.

That first award-winning season came in 2011 when he led the San Francisco 49ers to a 13-3 record in his opening campaign at the helm. By the time he left four years later, Harbaugh had compiled the fifth-best win percentage (69.5%) of any head coach in NFL history - even if he had worn out his welcome by the end.

Harbaugh will be a fresh face for the Chargers' organization, and there's the talent at his disposal to hit the ground running. He could very well win this award, though his own reputation as an elite coach may set the initial expectations too high.

Raheem Morris (+1000 via bet365)

I like the Falcons' chances to surprise as a long-shot contender in 2024, especially after landing Kirk Cousins to be their new signal-caller. Morris therefore fits the bill of a first-year coach with a chance to surprise in 2024-25.

Oddsmakers are already ahead of that with this short price on Morris, who was uneven in his previous role as a head coach with a combined 21-38 record (.356) across parts of four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2009-11) and Falcons (2020).

He's since worked alongside some of the league's brightest minds in Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay, and Dan Quinn. His defensive acumen also helped to lead the Los Angeles Rams to a title in the 2021 season. If Atlanta's defense shines in 2024, he'll be a popular name for this award.

Dan Campbell (+3500 via FanDuel)

This is a bit of a funky market for long shots, as most of the NFL's best coaches are getting the longest odds because of the high expectations they've set for themselves.

That is certainly true for Dan Campbell, who finished third in voting during 2023 after leading the Detroit Lions to their first NFC North title in 30 years. But what if the team climbs even higher in 2024? Surely Campbell would get the lion's share of credit if Detroit were to claim the NFC's top seed for the first time in franchise history.

That isn't out of the question for a group that returns its key players (and coaches) from 2023 and entered this offseason with $60 million in cap space. The Lions' odds of posting the NFC's best record will likely be shorter than Campbell's COTY odds, which makes this an intriguing play at a long-shot price. That's especially true with the rest of the market offering Campbell at 25/1 or shorter.
