Norris Trophy Odds 2024-25: Makar the Favorite, Hughes Surging
Quinn Hughes will not go down without a fight, as the reigning Norris Trophy winner closed the gap on Cale Makar, who remains the 2024-25 Norris Trophy odds favorite.
Hughes shot up from +550 to +215 over the last seven days and is closer in this race than the odds reflect.
Makar's odds decreased ever so slightly at our best NHL betting sites, moving from -215 to -180. Hughes and Makar are the only players with an implied win probability of over 5%. Both will feature heavily for Canada and the USA, the 4 Nations Face-Off odds front-runners.
Zachary Werenski, Josh Morrissey, and Roman Josi round out the five favorites, with the latter leapfrogging Adam Fox. Like his Stanley Cup odds favorite Edmonton Oilers, Evan Bouchard is starting to heat up and is receiving the sixth-shortest odds, tied with Fox.
Norris Trophy odds 2024-25
Some recent Norris Trophy odds takeaways:
- Of the favorites, Werenski boasts the best plus-minus (plus-9), an impressive stat considering the Columbus Blue Jackets have posted a goal differential of minus-6
- Werenski and Makar have logged nine goals each, the most among defensemen
- Hughes leads the Canucks with 32 points
Norris Trophy odds favorites 2024-25
Cale Makar (-180)
DraftKings offers the best odds for Makar at -180. He was getting odds of -350 at BetMGM last week. His price at that book has since lengthened to -210.
While still the prohibitive favorite, his implied probability at BetMGM has shifted from 77.78% to 67.74. That just shows what can happen in seven days.
However, he's still clearly ahead of the field, although Hughes is currently making an emphatic statement.
It's a testament to how well Makar has acquitted himself. He's logged 36 points in 30 games, leading all defensemen in scoring. His 1.20 points per game are the most, but Hughes is closing quickly with 1.19.
Makar leads with 27 assists and has registered the second-most power-play points (15) behind the Carolina Hurricanes' Shayne Gostisbehere (17).
He also leads in primary assists (16), is tied for third in assists per 60 minutes (2.14), and has snatched the seventh-most takeaways (21).
The former Norris Trophy winner fell just short of his ultimate goal in 2024, letting the award for best defenseman slip through his fingers. While he's on pace not to let that happen again, Hughes is surging and will have every reason to believe in his Norris Trophy stock.
Best odds: -180 via DraftKings | Implied probability: 64.29%
Quinn Hughes (+250)
Hughes is rising fast, and the stats suggest this race is closer than the odds reflect. The Canucks' ace is near the top of most statistical categories, including goals (tied for fourth), assists (third), points (second), and points per game (second).
And he's performing much better than Makar in most advanced analytics.
- Hughes has the fourth-best Corsi rating (Makar is 30th)
- Hughes has the 10th-best on-ice goals percentage (Makar is 54th)
- Hughes has the third-best on-ice expected goals percentage (Makar is 29th)
- Hughes has the fifth-best shot attempts against per 60 minutes (Makar is 51st)
While advanced stats rarely translate to votes, Quinn's widespread superiority should eventually turn some heads. His +250 odds offer excellent value, and a winning $10 bet will yield a $25 profit.

My Norris Trophy player to watch
Zach Werenski (+2000)
Outside of the big two, Werenski is getting the best chance of capturing his first Norris Trophy. The Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman is plus-9 on a non-playoff team, which speaks volumes considering how often he plays against the opposition's best players.
He's third in points (29), has tallied nine goals (tied for the most among defensemen with Makar), and Werenski has the fourth-most even-strength points (18).
The Blue Jackets rely on Werenski as much, if not more, than the Canucks and Avalanche do with Hughes and Makar. He's worth a flier At +2000, and a winning $10 bet would profit $200.
Best odds: +2000 via DraftKings | Implied probability: 4.76%
How to read Norris Trophy futures odds
Reading Norris Trophy odds is straightforward. Odds are usually presented in a format like +500 or -200. Positive odds (e.g., +500) show how much profit you’d make on a $100 bet.
For example, a $100 bet at +500 odds would win you $500, plus your original $100 stake, totaling $600. Negative odds (e.g., -200) indicate how much you need to bet to win $100. So, a $200 bet at -200 odds would win you $100, plus your $200 stake, totaling $300.
These odds also reflect the probability of a team winning the championship. Lower odds (e.g., +300) suggest a higher likelihood, while higher odds (e.g., +2000) indicate a lower probability.
Sportsbooks adjust these odds based on performance, injuries, trades, and betting patterns.
How to bet on Norris Trophy futures odds
The Norris Trophy has become an award designated for the NHL's best offensive defenceman. Those who produce offensively are the most likely finalists and winners.
So keep that in mind when choosing your Norris Trophy picks.
Does he play on an offensive team? Along with backing someone who tallies a ton of points, make sure he plays for a team that can frequently light the lamp.
For example, Evan Bouchard, Miro Heiskanen, and Makar fit this bill. Each player suits up for offensively potent teams, increasing their chances of winning the individual accolade.
Is the player injury-prone? Ensure you're selecting a durable blue liner who spends way more time on the ice than on the treatment table.
Is the player a power-play specialist? This corresponds to the previous category, but it's imperative you back those who are power-play specialists, quarterbacks if you will.
Also, do they quarterback a proficient or middling power play? Bouchard quarterbacks arguably the NHL's best power play, further lifting his Norris stock. Last year's winner, Hughes, scored 38 of 82 points on the power play.
