Have a gander at the 2024-25 Norris Trophy odds.

Now, take a moment to chew on the fact that Cale Makar has at least a 63% probability at our NHL betting sites of winning the Norris Trophy despite being less than two months into the season.

There's no better example of what dominance looks like.

Quinn Hughes is about the only one hanging on Makar's coattails, with the reigning Norris winner trading at +650. Josh Morrissey, Adam Fox, Roman Josi, and Evan Bouchard are doing their utmost to remain relevant in this particular race.

Five of the six Norris Trophy odds favorites play on teams among Stanley Cup odds front-runners.

Norris Trophy favorites 2024-25

Cale Makar (-180)

Makar is tied for fourth in the league, scoring 25 points in 18 games. That's about all you need to know about his start to the campaign. His 25 points are eight ahead of Neal Pionk and Morrissey, the second-highest-scoring defensemen.

He leads in power-play points (13), assists per 60 minutes (2.59), assists (19), is second in primary assists (11), and is tied for the third-most takeaways (18).

The former Norris Trophy winner fell just short of his ultimate goal in 2024, letting the award for best defenseman slip through his fingers. It's doubtful that will happen again, especially considering his torrid start.

The only stat glaringly inadequate where his Norris Trophy resume is concerned is his plus/minus rating. Makar is -6, well off the pace of Jake Middleton, who leads with +15.

My Norris Trophy player to watch

Josh Morrissey (+1300)

Morrissey is off to a fantastic start with the ascending Jets, and his odds provide excellent value. BetMGM offers the best price (+2200), and he's trading as short as +1000 at DraftKings.

He has 17 points in as many games, tied for second with Pionk.

Known for his skill and presence in the offensive zone, Morrissey is just as adept in his own end. Morrissey, the quarterback on the NHL's most prolific power play, has seven power-play points and is bound for countless more with how dangerous his team is with the extra man.

It's tough slogging for any defenseman not named Makar, but Morrissey has the best chance outside of Quinn Hughes to raise some decision-maker eyebrows.

How to read Norris Trophy futures odds

Reading Norris Trophy odds is straightforward. Odds are usually presented in a format like +500 or -200. Positive odds (e.g., +500) show how much profit you’d make on a $100 bet.

For example, a $100 bet at +500 odds would win you $500, plus your original $100 stake, totaling $600. Negative odds (e.g., -200) indicate how much you need to bet to win $100. So, a $200 bet at -200 odds would win you $100, plus your $200 stake, totaling $300.

These odds also reflect the probability of a team winning the championship. Lower odds (e.g., +300) suggest a higher likelihood, while higher odds (e.g., +2000) indicate a lower probability.

Sportsbooks adjust these odds based on performance, injuries, trades, and betting patterns.

How to bet on Norris Trophy futures odds

The Norris Trophy has become an award designated for the NHL's best offensive defenceman. Those who produce offensively are the most likely finalists and winners.

So keep that in mind when choosing your Norris Trophy picks.

Does he play on an offensive team? Along with backing someone who tallies a ton of points, make sure he plays for a team that can frequently light the lamp.

For example, Evan Bouchard, Miro Heiskanen, and Makar fit this bill. Each player suits up for offensively potent teams, increasing their chances of winning the individual accolade.

Is the player injury-prone? Ensure you're selecting a durable blue liner who spends way more time on the ice than on the treatment table.

Is the player a power-play specialist? This corresponds to the previous category, but it's imperative you back those who are power-play specialists, quarterbacks if you will.

Also, do they quarterback a proficient or middling power play? Bouchard quarterbacks arguably the NHL's best power play, further lifting his Norris stock. Last year's winner, Hughes, scored 38 of 82 points on the power play.

There hasn't been a repeat Norris Trophy winner in the last nine seasons. Erik Karlsson, who won in 2014-15 and 2022-23, is the last back-to-back winner.
