Cale Makar sitting atop the perch as the 2024-25 Norris Trophy odds favorite has become a familiar site, like seeing Connor McDavid lead the Hart Trophy odds charge.

Makar is a minus-money favorite at our NHL betting sites, increasing his lead over Quinn Hughes and Zach Werenski. Let's take a look at the Norris Trophy odds.

Norris Trophy odds 2025

Some recent Norris Trophy odds takeaways:

  • Werenski leads the Columbus Blue Jackets in scoring with 46 points
  • Werenski has seen the biggest odds improvement among the favorites, moving from +2000 to +600 over the last month
  • Makar leads all defensemen in goals (13) and points (49)
  • Hughes leads the Canucks with 45 points
  • Makar, Hughes, and Werenski are the only players with an implied win probability exceeding 14%
  • Among the three favorites, Makar's Colorado Avalanche have the best Stanley Cup odds

Cale Makar Norris Trophy odds (-275)

Makar's odds have shortened from -180 to -275 over the last month. Again, he's pushing ahead of all competitors, including Hughes. Makar started the season with a 13-game point streak and cooled off slightly before recently notching a point in eight of nine.

He leads all defensemen in the following categories: goals, points, even-strength points, power-play goals, power-play points, and primary assists.

He's also leading a resurgent Avs team, ascending the standings thanks to a marked defensive improvement. That has more to do with their goaltending change, but Makar can take some credit.

One of the three favorites will win this award. I don't see Makar running away from Hughes much more than he already has, so waiting to see if his odds lengthen is the best play. A winning $10 bet will profit just 3.64.

Quinn Hughes Norris Trophy odds (+375)

Hughes' odds have lengthened over the last month, moving from +250 to +375 at BetRivers. After a torrid pace that saw him close to reeling in Makar, Hughes wasn't able to keep pace, at least where the odds were concerned.

However, make no mistake, Hughes is in this race and has every chance of keeping things tight down the stretch. He has 15 multi-point games, three in the last four games alone.

He's more productive on the road and is scoring at the highest clip of all defensemen (1.25 points per game). In addition, he's performing better than Makar in several advanced analytics.

  • Hughes is tied for the fifth-best Corsi rating (Makar is 28th)
  • Hughes has the eighth-best on-ice goals percentage (Makar is 30th)
  • Hughes has the third-best on-ice expected goals percentage (Makar is 28th)
  • Hughes has the second-best shot attempts against per 60 minutes (Makar is sixth)

Finally, Hughes doesn't play with Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen, two of the purest creators and point-getters around. That has to count for something.

While advanced stats rarely translate to votes, Quinn's widespread superiority could eventually turn some heads. His +375 odds offer excellent value, and a winning $10 bet will yield a $37.50 profit.

Zach Werenski Norris Trophy odds (+600)

Outside of the big two, Werenski has the best chance of capturing his first Norris Trophy. And his odds movement is proof of his influential role in this race. They've moved from +2000 to +600 over the last month, an implied win probability increase of almost 10%.

The Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman is plus-9, and he's the primary reason the Blue Jackets are in the wild-card mix. He's second in points (46), has tallied 12 goals (second behind Makar), and has the third-most even-strength points (26).

The Blue Jackets rely on Werenski as much, if not more than the Canucks and Avalanche do with Hughes and Makar. Good for you if you backed him when I supported him as a +2000-or-more flier. Then again, he needs to sustain his torrid pace, but there are no signs suggesting we won't.

A winning $10 bet will profit $60.

How to read Norris Trophy futures odds

Reading Norris Trophy odds is straightforward. Odds are usually presented in a format like +500 or -200. Positive odds (e.g., +500) show how much profit you’d make on a $100 bet.

For example, a $100 bet at +500 odds would win you $500, plus your original $100 stake, totaling $600. Negative odds (e.g., -200) indicate how much you need to bet to win $100. So, a $200 bet at -200 odds would win you $100, plus your $200 stake, totaling $300.

These odds also reflect the probability of a team winning the championship. Lower odds (e.g., +300) suggest a higher likelihood, while higher odds (e.g., +2000) indicate a lower probability.

Sportsbooks adjust these odds based on performance, injuries, trades, and betting patterns.

How to bet on Norris Trophy futures odds

The Norris Trophy has become an award designated for the NHL's best offensive defenceman. Those who produce offensively are the most likely finalists and winners.

So keep that in mind when choosing your Norris Trophy picks.

Does he play on an offensive team? Along with backing someone who tallies a ton of points, make sure he plays for a team that can frequently light the lamp.

For example, Evan Bouchard, Miro Heiskanen, and Makar fit this bill. Each player suits up for offensively potent teams, increasing their chances of winning the individual accolade.

Is the player injury-prone? Ensure you're selecting a durable blue liner who spends way more time on the ice than on the treatment table.

Is the player a power-play specialist? This corresponds to the previous category, but it's imperative you back those who are power-play specialists, quarterbacks if you will.

Also, do they quarterback a proficient or middling power play? Bouchard quarterbacks arguably the NHL's best power play, further lifting his Norris stock. Last year's winner, Hughes, scored 38 of 82 points on the power play.
