First touchdown scorer prediction: Saquon Barkley
Best odds: +430 via FanDuel | Implied probability: 18.87%
Yeah, yeah, Barkley is the “boring” pick. But he’s as likely as anyone to open the scoring. And it’s his birthday, so what a fine gift it would be.
While he finished one rushing touchdown behind Hurts in the regular season, he can also score through the air if push comes to shove. He also is the more likely of the two to get it done from distance, as the bulk of Hurts’ work comes deep in the red zone.
Look for the Eagles to lean on their stud running back early as they try to control the game.
–– Andrew Reid
Anytime touchdown scorer prediction: Devonta Smith
Best odds: +250 via BetMGM | Implied probability: 28.57%
There’s something to be said for familiarity - and, in Smith’s case against the Chiefs, the success that comes with it.
The Chiefs vs. Eagles history shows that Smith has faced the Eagles three times already over his four-year career. He has yet to reach pay dirt against them, but his significant production otherwise shows the pass catcher is a weapon that can be leaned on against a Steve Spagnuolo defense, and Smith will get opportunities as a result.
Smith has accumulated 321 receiving yards on 20 receptions across his matchups with the Chiefs.
–– Sean Tomlinson
Last touchdown scorer prediction: DeAndre Hopkins
Best odds: +3000 via bet365 | Implied probability: 3.23%
Hopkins has been eerily quiet in the NFL playoffs thus far. He’s been targeted just three times and hauled in one reception for 11 yards. This has his odds inflated heading into the Super Bowl, which means they’re much easier to play.
Hopkins has been vocal about how much playing in his first Super Bowl means to him. As such, it’s unlikely one of the best wide receivers of this generation will be content with sitting this one out.
The last three Super Bowls have seen a wide receiver haul in the Big Game’s final touchdown for the winner (Cooper Kupp, Skyy Moore, and Mecole Hardman). If this game is as close as our Super Bowl predictions expect, Mahomes could turn to his most experienced wideout to clinch the three-peat.
–– Gabe Henderson
2+ touchdown scorer prediction: Saquon Barkley
Best odds: +285 via DraftKings | Implied probability: 25.97%
Barkley scored two touchdowns in six of 16 games during the regular season, hitting pay dirt twice at a 37.5% rate. He’s ratcheted it up another gear in the postseason, scoring at least two touchdowns in the divisional round and the NFC Championship.
Even with increased attention from defenses, Barkley has showcased an unmatched ability to find holes and punch it in. A winning $10 bet will profit $28.50 if he does it again in his first Super Bowl.
–– Gary Pearson
