The Dallas Cowboys have begun searching for their next head coach after Mike McCarthy's tenure at the helm of America's Team ended Monday with a 49-35-0 record over five full seasons. Deion Sanders is the betting co-favorite by the Cowboys' next coach odds with his odds back to +100.

The current odds represent an implied probability of 55.56% that Sanders replaces McCarthy on the Dallas sideline. Sanders - a former two-way star player for the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, Cowboys, Washington, and Baltimore Ravens - spent the last two seasons coaching the Colorado Buffaloes to a combined 13-12 record and one bowl appearance.

He's reportedly already been in talks with Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones. Kellen Moore shares the +100 with Jason Witten recently shortening to +600 and third on the oddsboard.

Sanders - who spent five seasons playing for the Cowboys from 1995-1999 - has seen his odds fluctuate over the past week. He was as short as -125 after opening at +100 and has since returned to that opening number while becoming a co-favorite. Former Cowboys QB Kellen Moore shares that co-favorite status with Sanders, and former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten (+600) is third on the oddsboard.

Kliff Kingsbury, Joe Brady, and Ben Johnson, currently NFL offensive coordinators for the Washington Commanders, Buffalo Bills, and Detroit Lions, respectively, represent the most accomplished candidates among the favorites. Aaron Glenn of the Detroit Lions is the top current defensive coordinator of the candidates.

Bill Belichick reportedly would have been interested in the Cowboys' position but already took a job as head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels in the college ranks.

Long shots

  • Lovie Smith (+10000)
  • Tony Dungy (+10000)
  • Tom Coughlin (+10000)
  • Tony Romo (+10000)
  • Jimmy Johnson (+10000)
  • Emmitt Smith (+10000)
  • Michael Irvin (+10000)

As long as Jones remains in charge of the Cowboys, none of the above long-shot names can be dismissed as potential candidates. A $10 bet on any candidate with +10000 odds would return a profit of $1,000 should they be on the sideline during Week 1, according to our betting calculators.

Cowboys next coach prediction: Sanders (+100)

The Cowboys have been stuck in mediocrity for much of the past three decades. They haven't had a season worse than their 4-12 campaign in 2015 and haven't made it out of the second round of the playoffs since winning Super Bowl XXX.

Trusting Jones to make the smart move is becoming increasingly difficult. And he's never been one to shy away from a splash.

Sanders represents an orca-sized splash and is equipped with the media savvy to handle the pressure in Dallas. He's not the best candidate, but he's the best pick and the +100 odds would double up any wager if he's Jones' choice.
