Favored to make the playoffs just a month ago, the Cincinnati Bengals (4-6) face an uphill battle to qualify. However, Cincy’s wild card hopes will get a huge boost if it can defeat the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night at SoFi Stadium (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC.)

After beating the Tennessee Titans 27-17 in Week 10, the 6-3 Los Angeles Chargers are marginal 1-point favorites for the Sunday night clash against the Bengals.

The Chargers haven't surrendered more than 20 points in nine games, the first time that has happened in the NFL since 2013. They've allowed an NFL-best 13.1 points per game, over three fewer than second-place Pittsburgh.

We considered their stout defense when making our Bengals vs. Chargers early picks.

My early Bengals vs. Chargers prediction: Under 47

Prediction: Under 47

Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase have lit up the skies over the past two weeks, helping the Bengals put up 75 points against the Baltimore Ravens and Las Vegas Raiders.

Before those games, however, Cincy’s offense was held in check by more challenging stop units of the Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns and New York Giants, averaging 18.3 points during that stretch.

The Chargers’ defense should pose the biggest test yet. LA racked up seven sacks in last week’s 27-17 victory over the Titans, and the Chargers’ ability to get after the quarterback should spell trouble for a Cincy offensive line that has struggled to protect Burrow all season.

Offensively, Los Angeles is happy to slow down the pace. Against Tennessee, the Chargers ate up nearly half the fourth quarter with an 11-play, 95-yard drive that Titans head coach Brian Callahan called “death by a thousand paper cuts.”

It’s worth noting that the Chargers have yet to score more than 27 points in a game this season.

Moneyline

  • Chargers best odds: -120 via Caesars | Implied probability: 54.5%
  • Bengals best odds: +110 via BetMGM | Implied probability: 47.6%

Los Angeles opened as high as -130 on the moneyline, but early action on the Bengals caused that price to shorten on Monday. BetMGM (+110) and FanDuel (+108) offered the best prices on Cincinnati, while Chargers bettors could find -120 at Caesars and DraftKings.

Spread

  • Chargers best odds: -1 (-112) via DraftKings
  • Bengals best odds: +2.5 (-115) via BetMGM

Three of Cincinnati’s six losses have come by three points or less, so getting the best possible odds on the spread could be critical.

The early point spread varied among our best NFL betting sites, with BetMGM spotting Cincinnati 2.5 points (albeit at -115 juice), DraftKings listing Los Angeles at -1 (-112) and Caesars offering the Chargers -1.5 (-105).

Over/Under

  • Over best odds: 46.5 (-110) via BetMGM
  • Under best odds: 47 (-110) via Caesars

With trends pointing in opposite directions (Cincinnati has gone Over the total in seven of nine games, and the Chargers are 7-2 to the Under this year), it’s hard to know how this total will move. BetMGM and most other sportsbooks set their number at 46.5 at the time of writing, but Caesars and Bet365 were among the few that listed the total at 47.
