The Oklahoma City Thunder (8-2) opened the season as a prohibitive betting favorite in the Western Conference. They started 7-0 before dropping two of its last three games to the Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors.

Now, the Thunder host a tough Los Angeles Clippers team on the second leg of a back-to-back set. Despite the loss, the Thunder still lead the NBA in defensive rating and net rating.

The Clippers (6-4) were a great defensive team last year and are off to an even better start on that side of the ball, with Jeff Van Gundy on board as the lead assistant to head coach Tyronn Lue. They allow the second-fewest points per game (106.3) behind the Thunder and are playing at the second-slowest pace this season.

The Thunder's defense is stifling against all positions, especially so against guards now that Alex Caruso has entered the mix. The Thunder allow the lowest assist to field goal ratio and sixth-fewest paint points (44.0) this season.

Since joining the Clippers, Harden has produced 23 assists in four meetings with the Thunder, including one matchup in which he recorded 16 points and 8 assists over 41 minutes.

He’s only averaging 11 potential assists per game over his last five outings and registered 7 assists on 10 potential assists in a 105-92 home loss to the Thunder to start that five-game cold spell. There is real blowout potential here, with the Thunder coming off a loss and a much thinner Clippers team playing their third game in four nights.

Ivica Zubac Under 30.5 points + rebounds + assists ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Zubac and Harden are correlated in terms of their success against certain defenses. If the Thunder keep Harden out of the lane, it’s unlikely Zubac will get many touches in scoring position.

Oklahoma City allows the lowest 2-point field goal percentage (47.7%) and the fewest points per game (102.9) this season. It should be solid despite being without Chet Holmgren for several weeks. While OKC allows the most assists to centers, that small sample size is skewed by two matchups against Nikola Jokic and one against Alperen Sengun.

Zubac has one or fewer assists in five straight matchups against this team and has failed to score 16 points in 18 straight games against the Thunder. He was also limited to 28 minutes in the last matchup against this squad that can torch slow centers.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Under 29.5 points ⭐⭐⭐

The Clippers' defense is also elite and has been locked in with its assignments against the opposition’s top weapon. Van Gundy should have a good game plan to limit SGA or at least force him to pass to his teammates instead of taking higher-percentage shots.

Gilgeous-Alexander has racked up 17 assists over his last two outings against the team that drafted him. His usage rate is down in general this season, with OKC showcasing added depth and simply blowing teams out of the water.

The Thunder rolled Houston on Friday after taking their first loss, and SGA only played 29 minutes. He’s scored fewer than 29 points in 8 of 10 appearances this season and logged 30 minutes or fewer in four appearances.
