The Boston Red Sox made headlines on Wednesday night when they signed infielder Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120-million contract, cementing themselves as threats to the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles in the American League East.

However, are the Red Sox true contenders after their blockbuster deal? We're diving into the latest Red Sox World Series odds and determining whether the Bregman addition changes Boston's outlook from a potential postseason club to a front-runner to win the Fall Classic.

World Series odds 2025

If you're going to bet on the Red Sox to win the World Series, make sure you're getting the best odds across our best sportsbooks.

For example, Caesars is offering +1800 odds on Boston to win it all. That means a winning $10 bet would return a $180 profit, while the same bet elsewhere could return $250 - so you're sacrificing $70 (or nearly an additional 40%) by betting on those odds.

Therefore, the choice should come down to either FanDuel, BetMGM, or bet365. From my experience, FanDuel offers the most generous cashout options throughout the season, so I'd place my bet there.

Red Sox World Series odds movement

The Red Sox's odds to win the World Series have moved significantly across our best sports betting apps - shortening from +4000 to no better than +2500.

Opening World Series odds

  • Dodgers: +400
  • Braves: +800
  • Yankees: +800
  • Orioles: +1100
  • Phillies: +1100
  • Padres: +1300
  • Astros: +1400
  • Mets: +1400
  • Mariners: +2500
  • Rangers: +2500
  • Red Sox: +4000

The Red Sox opened with the 11th-best World Series odds, tied with the likes of the Cincinnati Reds, Tampa Bay Rays, and Detroit Tigers, with the latter reportedly serving as one of the finalists in the Bregman sweepstakes.

However, Boston now owns the seventh-shortest World Series odds, just behind Bregman's former team in the Astros.

The Red Sox aren't exactly in true contender status with the Atlanta Braves (+1000), New York Mets (+1200), or Philadelphia Phillies (+1200), and they're behind two AL East rivals in the New York Yankees (+800) and Baltimore Orioles (+1700). But this movement signifies a clear shift in expectations for a team that won 81 games last year.

Will the Red Sox improve in 2025?

Of course, the No. 1 question now is how much better do the likes of Bregman, Garrett Crochet, and Walker Buehler make the Red Sox in addition to hopefully more healthy seasons from Lucas Giolito, Trevor Story, and Triston Casas?

The Red Sox are actually projected by PECOTA to finish in the basement of the AL East, while FanGraphs has them projected to finish second in the division, so not even the top projection models can come to an agreement on this team's outlook.

Red Sox offseason additions & key players for 2025

Let's break down the impact of a few key players for the Red Sox ahead of the 2025 season, starting with the $120 million man himself.

Alex Bregman (2B)

Bregman is reportedly expected to play second base for the Red Sox, leaving Rafael Devers at third and Casas as the primary first baseman.

Second base was a revolving door of mediocrity for Boston last year. Enmanuel Valdez played the most games at second for the Red Sox, and he was downright awful. He was actually worth negative fWAR, and he managed a pitiful 72 wRC+ while also playing poor defense.

Bregman will be a huge upgrade defensively after years of playing a much tougher position as the Astros' third baseman. He had another strong season in 2024, accruing 4.1 fWAR and slashing .260/.315/.453.

Bregman has become underrated because the expectation that he'd be a perennial MLB MVP odds favorite never came to fruition, so people now consider him a bust. However, outside of a rough 2021 campaign that was marred by a hamstring injury, he's been one of baseball's most consistent infielders.

Even if you exclude his two MVP-caliber seasons in 2018 and 2019, he ranks sixth among third basemen in fWAR from 2020-2024, just behind Devers. If you include them, he's second, ahead of Manny Machado and Nolan Arenado despite playing in far fewer games.

Additionally, if Fenway Park was ever built for an active MLB player, it would be Bregman, whose elite plate discipline and gap power should shine in his new home.

Garrett Crochet (SP)

Crochet serves as the second-biggest favorite by the AL Cy Young odds for good reason.

The southpaw was downright ridiculous last season. Here's how he ranked among AL starters with at least 140 innings last year:

  • 4.7 fWAR (third - despite pitching far fewer innings than competitors)
  • 3.58 ERA (15th)
  • 2.72 expected ERA (second)
  • 2.49 FIP (second)
  • 2.38 xFIP (first)
  • 12.88 strikeouts per nine innings (first - second most were 10.77)
  • 2.03 walks per nine (eighth)
  • 29.6% K-BB (first - second was 25.65)
  • 2.53 SIERA (first)
  • .318 BABIP (fourth-highest - tells us he was relatively unlucky)

Basically, Crochet is a bona fide stud, and should the Red Sox make the postseason, he will torment whichever team has to stand in the batter's box against him.

Veteran rotation

Now, who knows exactly how good Giolito will be after undergoing elbow surgery last year - he opted for an internal brace vs. Tommy John surgery. The same can be said for Buehler, who has looked like a shell of his former self during the last two seasons.

However, if either of them can find some semblance of the form that made them both Cy Young contenders as recently as 2021, that's a massive boost to a Red Sox rotation that actually finished with the eighth-best ERA and accrued the 11th-most fWAR last season.

As of now, Buehler is slotted in as the SP5 and Giolito the SP6, showing us that the Red Sox don't even need both to be great.

Injured infielders

The Red Sox played the majority of last season without Story and Casas, and they should help make Boston much more competitive this season if they manage to stay healthy.

Perhaps the biggest issue with Story is that it's possible he's not very good. Yet Boston has plenty of infield reinforcements waiting in the wings if he does indeed stink or gets hurt for the third straight year (more on them in a bit).

For his part, Casas is projected by Steamer to accrue 2.3 fWAR. Dominic Smith played the most games at first base for the Red Sox last year, and he managed to accrue 0.3 fWAR and serve as a below-average hitter by wRC+.

With a healthy Story and Casas, the Red Sox feature speed and power throughout the entire lineup.

Loaded farm system

Now, for those prospects we briefly mentioned before:

Boston's farm system is truly stacked, with outfielder Roman Anthony listed as MLB Pipeline's No. 2 overall prospect behind only Roki Sasaki, and infielders Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer sitting at No. 7 and No. 12, respectively.

For their part, Campbell and Anthony are two of the biggest favorites by the AL Rookie of the Year odds, and they could make an impact at the major-league level at any point this season.

If the Red Sox suffer injuries to their lineup or see any of these young studs as a considerable improvement, they surely won't hesitate to call them up, especially since they've opened their window to contend by signing Bregman to just a three-year deal. The time to win is now.

My best bet & prediction for the Red Sox

As you might expect, I'm high on the Red Sox this season and not just because of the Bregman signing. That's why I would bet on the Red Sox to win the World Series (+2500).

Red Sox to win the World Series (+2500)

I bet on the Red Sox at +4000 back on Dec. 1, and I didn't think I'd back them at odds shorter than that. However, we are, and with additional information here on Feb. 13, I like them a lot even at this number.

Do I think Boston is that much worse than the Astros, whose best odds are +2000? I actually think the Red Sox look better on paper. Then, let's take into account the teams trading at odds just longer than Boston's: the San Diego Padres (+2800), Texas Rangers (+3000), Chicago Cubs (+3000), and Seattle Mariners (+3000).

Outside of the Rangers, none of those teams have won anything in recent years, while Alex Cora and the Red Sox won the World Series in 2018. The roster may be different, but this is a manager and an organization that knows how to win. That provides the Red Sox with a boost when the trade deadline rolls around if they're still among the contenders.

When I factor in the talent on the MLB roster ahead of Opening Day, and the crop of youngsters who could debut this year, it's hard to suggest the Red Sox aren't true World Series odds contenders this season.
