Oregon State vs. Virginia predictions, expert picks & best bets

Showdowns between two of the top teams in college baseball are usually reserved for conference play or the postseason, so this game is a treat for fans. Early returns show Oregon State is the better team by every metric besides ranking. But as the latter shows, it's still too soon to make those judgments.

As such, we're fading the betting public and oddsmakers at our best sports betting apps. We predict that Virginia will pick up a signature early-season win and hand Oregon State its first loss.

๐Ÿ† Pick to win Oregon State vs. Virginia: Virginia (+102 via FanDuel) โญโญโญ

It's not often you see the nation's No. 2 team trading at plus money during the second weekend of the season. But the public is high on Oregon State after it put up an astonishing 48 runs across the team's first four games.

But winter conditions in Texas and a mid-week cancellation have given the Beavers' red-hot bats a chance to cool down. Furthermore, they'll be facing a much tougher team in Virginia, which boasts a pitcher staff that's surrendered just six runs to open the season. Senior Jay Woolfolk takes the bump for the Cavs as manager Brian O'Connor turns to experience in this spot.

We really like this matchup for Virginia, especially against a pitcher who was struggling with his command in his first start. Oregon State turns to Nelson Keljo, their seasoned ace who gave up five walks against Xavier to open the year. Disciplined teams like O'Connor's will make opponents pay for issuing free bases more often than not.

The left-hander faces a murderer's row from the Cavaliers, who trot out five lefties in their starting lineup (first baseman Chris Arroyo, shortstop Eric Becker, designated hitter Harrison Didawick, left-fielder James Nunnallee, and center-fielder Aidan Teel). Becker and Arroyo will be of particular concern for Keljo, as they hit leadoff and clean-up respectively.

A $10 winning wager on Virginia returns $10.20 in profit, which is enough for us to take a flier at FanDuel.

๐Ÿ’ช Oregon State vs. Virginia pitching matchup

  • Oregon State: Nelson Keljo (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
  • Virginia: Jay Woolfolk (0-0, 3.86 ERA)

Keljo is the expected starter for the Beavers after manager Mitch Canham gave him the Opening Day nod last Friday. The junior left-hander fanned five Xavier hitters over four innings of scoreless work. However, Keljo's command left room to be desired after five walks.

Meanwhile, Woolfolk endured a rocky start to his season, giving up two runs during the opening frame against Michigan. However, he blanked the Wolverines during his other 3 2/3 innings of work, striking out five batters while walking just one.

The senior's work is now cut out for him this afternoon against one of the hottest lineups in college baseball.
