Where will Juan Soto play in 2025?
When the Yankees swung a blockbuster deal with the San Diego Padres to acquire Soto last December, they knew there was a chance the superstar slugger could leave after just one season.
Now, that seems like a distinct possibility after New York fell short in the World Series ahead of Soto's first foray into free agency in his seven-year MLB career.
The Yankees are still the overwhelming favorites to retain the four-time All-Star, but Soto has made clear that he won't offer any hometown discounts to the Bronx Bombers ahead of his first opportunity to cash in as a free agent.
Soto told reporters that he'll be "open to listen" to every offer presented in free agency and that he's "available for all 30 teams" - a clear signal that the 26-year-old star, who is represented by super agent Scott Boras, will seek the highest payday possible.
Favorites to sign Juan Soto in MLB free agency
Yankees (-230)
Even as Soto publicly courts the other 29 teams ahead of free agency, the best sportsbooks still expect the All-Star bat to remain in the Bronx.
It's easy to understand why: New York gave up assets to acquire Soto last offseason and came within a whisker of winning its first World Series title in 15 years. And the perennial MLB MVP odds contender was a major reason why.
Ownership has also never shied away from opening up the checkbook for stars like Aaron Judge ($360 million), Gerrit Cole ($324 million), and Giancarlo Stanton ($325 million) - though it may need to double those figures to retain Soto.
I'd give the Yankees a better shot than anyone else, but this implied probability of 71.43% feels a little steep given how noncommittal Soto has been in the wake of Wednesday's loss. It does feel like he may have played his last game for New York.
Mets (+170)
Could Soto really leave one New York team for another? The Mets' odds to land the superstar have shortened dramatically, telling us that they're gaining momentum in this market.
The Mets reportedly never made an offer last year to Ohtani and will almost certainly avoid making the same mistake again.
Mets owner Steve Cohen hasn't been shy about his efforts to lure stars to the Big Apple, and his team is well-positioned to entice Soto after the Mets made a run to the NLCS before losing to the eventual champion Dodgers.
Dodgers (+1100)
Los Angeles' odds have lengthened ahead of their meeting with Soto on Nov. 19.
The Dodgers famously netted the two biggest fish in last year's free agency by signing Ohtani and pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and the nature of Ohtani's heavily deferred contract still leaves room for another big swing this offseason.
And then there's this video of Soto staring longingly as the Dodgers celebrate their World Series championship on the Yankees' home field - which has already fueled speculation that he could join them ahead of next season:
I don't think that alone is a good reason to bet on Los Angeles, but the team's seemingly unlimited budget and penchant for pursuing big bats - even with Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, and Mookie Betts in tow - should concern all other suitors. This would be the bet I would make, especially with a $10 wager paying a $65 profit if Soto returns to Southern California.
Long shots to sign Juan Soto in MLB free agency
Nationals (+1600)
Could a return to D.C. be in the works for Soto, who began his MLB career with the Nationals and led them to a World Series in 2019?
Some early reports in September suggested that Washington would be open to a reunion, though it remains to be seen if ownership - which traded him after he rejected a 15-year, $440 million extension - would be willing to shell out the type of money required to land him this winter.
Blue Jays (+1600)
For a brief moment last offseason, it seemed like Toronto had landed the biggest free agent in MLB history.
That never came to fruition, but Soto would be one heck of a consolation prize for a team at a crossroads heading into 2025. Don't sleep on the Jays as a dark horse in this race, especially at such long odds.
Padres (+6000)
Boras made news earlier this week when he said that Soto would "be a Padre today" if not for the sudden death of owner Peter Seidler, who was behind the move to trade for the All-Star slugger in the first place.
Could Soto be a Padre tomorrow to complete the arc? I wouldn't count on it, considering the organization's cost-cutting move last winter, but the interest is clearly there from Soto if new ownership changes its mind.
How much will Juan Soto get paid in MLB free agency?
While Soto's next destination is the subject of swirling rumors, another question has dominated the lead-up to free agency: how much will he get paid?
Soto famously rejected a $440 million extension over 15 years from the Nationals two years ago, which looks like a bargain in hindsight, and many expect that his next deal will exceed $600 million in total.
In early September, The Athletic predicted a contract of $560 million over 14 years for Soto. That would match Judge's annual salary of $40 million but still fall well short of the 10-year, $700 million record deal that Ohtani signed last year.
Others, like ESPN's Karl Ravech, are expecting Soto to come much closer to Ohtani territory with his new deal this summer:

According to FanDuel, there's a 92% chance that Soto signs a contract of at least $550 million in free agency and a 75.61% chance that it reaches $600 million. It also suggests better than a 50% chance that Soto clears $650 million - just $50 million shy of the biggest deal of all time.
While I do expect Soto to approach those figures, the odds required to bet on that feel a bit short considering that Soto was projected by industry experts to sign a deal for less than $500 million just a few months ago.
Clearly, that seems low in hindsight. It feels increasingly likely that Soto will ink a deal anywhere between $550 million and $650 million this winter.
