The sports betting industry continues to be one of the fastest-growing businesses in the country, at least where revenue is concerned.
With nearly $120 billion wagered legally across the country in 2023, and trends suggesting an even larger number coming this year, sports betting has established a massive foothold in the American sports scene.
We break down the most up-to-date numbers both in sum and by state, sharing the monthly handle and hold for all legal jurisdictions. These are updated regularly, so check in often.
US Sports Betting Revenue: 2024 vs Previous Years
Let there be no doubt that sports betting continues to grow at a breakneck pace.
After cruising past the $100 billion mark in total legal wagers in 2023, the industry is pacing to set a new yearly record in 2024. A hot start to the year means that the U.S. has now seen more than $408 billion in bets at legal sportsbooks since the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was repealed in 2018.
And as expected, the best sportsbooks in North America have driven the majority of the action in nearly every state.
Here's a look at the yearly handle, revenue and hold percentage by year to date (and check out our handy glossary at the bottom of the page for definitions of these betting terms).

Colorado Sports Betting Revenue
The Colorado sports betting scene is one of the most prolific in the nation (and that's especially true for all of the table tennis enthusiasts in the Centennial State). Strangely, Colorado has seen just four months with double-digit hold since the start of 2022, though two of them have come over the past four months of reporting.

DC Sports Betting Revenue
A little extra competition has had a big impact on the DC sports betting scene, between the replacement of GambetDC with the far superior FanDuel and the introduction of more sports betting options overall. But all those good vibes have come at a steep cost, with DC sportsbooks averaging north of 13.5% hold over the past four months.

Delaware Sports Betting Revenue
The coffers in The First State are positively brimming thanks to a 50% tax rate levied on BetRivers, the lone Delaware sports betting operator. That has prompted BetRivers to tighten the odds considerably on most of its betting markets, resulting in hold rates north of 16.5% in both 2022 and 2023 (though that has come down significantly so far in 2024).

Illinois joined the Billion Dollar Club for monthly handle in October 2022 and hasn't looked back, recording 15 billion-dollar months as of May 2024. Illinois sports betting features eight prominent betting sites – and they're about to pay a lot more in tax, with Gov. Pritzker green-lighting a hike that could see top operators pay up to 40% of gross gaming revenue.

Indiana sports betting is enjoying a welcome boon in 2024. The Indiana Pacers' dramatic improvement and the arrival of Caitlin Clark as the WNBA's Next Big Thing have provided a nice jolt in the arm to one of the country's biggest basketball hotbeds. Operators in Indiana pay a reasonable 9.5% tax on both retail and online revenue.

Mississippi Sports Betting Revenue
Mississippi sports betting was one of the few legal operations to actually take a step back in 2023, seeing a 12.2% drop in handle and an 18.7% dip in gross revenue. And with the first seven months of 2024 mostly down from or level with the previous year, a bounce-back could be a difficult proposition in Mississippi (though April and August saw small year-over-year bumps).

Nevada Sports Betting Revenue
U.S. sports wagering's O.G. might not be the only game in town anymore, but Nevada sports betting is still the gold standard. You won't find more market selection or competitive odds than with Nevada sports betting operators, and the consistently low hold percentage is further indication that Nevada-based sportsbooks are just better for players.

New Hampshire Sports Betting Revenue
Things are good for operators in the New Hampshire sports betting circle. After settling for a hum-drum 7.5% hold rate in 2022, that number shot up to 9.7% in 2023 and is trending toward an even better result this year despite a rough summer. And that's a critical result for sports betting sites who face a staggering 51% tax rate on revenue in NH.

New Jersey Sports Betting Revenue
It should come as no surprise to see the state that spearheaded the quest to have PASPA repealed is also one of the most prolific when it comes to sports betting handle and revenue. New Jersey sports betting produced nearly $12 billion in action in 2023, up from just under $11 billion the year before. Operators pay 14.25% in tax, though lawmakers want to increase that to 30% as part of the 2024-25 state budget.

The state saw a drop of nearly $90 million in handle from 2022 to 2023, resulting in a $3.1 million reduction in gross revenue. But after a slow start to 2024, things are turning around – and a strong NFL showing could put this year's figures ahead of 2022.

States with Potential to Legalize Sports Betting
While more than three-quarters of all U.S. states have some form of legal sports wagering, there are still some notable holdouts. Here's a look at states that appear to have a path to legalized sports betting at some point in the future:
Future of US Sports Betting Revenue
What does the future hold for sports betting handles, revenues and hold percentages across the United States? Here are some factors that should pay a role in how these figures evolve:
More Legal States: Sports betting is now legal in 38 states and districts, with the majority of those welcoming business from the best sports betting apps. And while there aren't any states presently on the verge of joining the mix, it's quite possible that we could see further legalization in late 2024 or 2025, thereby increasing overall revenue potential.
Available Betting Markets: Developments here could have a dramatic positive or negative impact on sportsbooks' earning potential. While betting sites are constantly introducing new betting markets across a variety of sports, some – most notably, college player props – are being removed by legislators due to ongoing issues with player harassment.
More Betting Options: With Phase 1 of the U.S. sports betting maturity process (initial player acquisition and retention) essentially over, sports betting sites have now moved on to Phase 2: innovation. And both players and sportsbooks should reap the benefits here, between new ways to parlay picks, more niche sports coverage and a larger emphasis on microbetting.
Increased Notoriety: This is the biggest wild-card in the U.S. sports betting landscape. While we've seen positive examples of increased betting activity due to external factors (Taylor Swift, anyone?), a spate of controversial betting practices has cast a shadow over the industry, and further incidents are sure to adversely affect sports betting revenues.
Reduced Promo Spend: Access to many of the best sportsbook promos helped fuel a meteoric rise in sign-ups – but those days might be coming to an end. With only a handful of states yet to launch, and the majority of the best sports betting sites having curtailed their promotional spend, new customers might be tougher to pull in moving forward.
Glossary of Betting Market Terms
Handle: The "handle" refers to the total amount of money wagered by bettors on a particular event or series of events. It's a term commonly used in sports betting, horse racing, and other forms of gambling.
Gross Revenue: Gross revenue in sports betting refers to the total amount of money that a sportsbook or betting operator collects from bettors through wagers minus all winning bets. It represents the total revenue generated by the sportsbook before deducting expenses such as operating costs, taxes, and any other fees.
Hold: The "hold" refers to the percentage of the total wagers placed that the sportsbook keeps as profit after paying out winning bets. The hold is calculated by dividing the sportsbook's gross revenue (total amount of money collected from losing bets) by the total amount of money wagered.
Tickets: Also known as "receipts", tickets represent the total number of bets placed during a specific period or on a specific bet type or market. Bet amount is immaterial to ticket count.
